Fraser Learns the ‘Measures’ of Fatherhood

As a Father and Actor, Brendan Embraces His Emotional Role in “Extraordinary Measures” Alongside Harrison Ford

In a varied film career that has included action, drama and comedy, Brendan Fraser’s movies have taken in more than $2 billion worldwide.

Friday, he’s back in theaters starring in the true story of a man battling the odds in hopes of saving his children, in “Extraordinary Measures.”

Fraser plays John Crawley, who has two children who have a rare form of muscular dystrophy called Pompe disease, and he decides to take matters in his own hands.

“He sets off on his own to galvanize a team to find an enzyme replacement treatment. One doesn’t exist,” Fraser explained to “Early Show” co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez. “This is a true story of a man’s effort to save his children’s lives. He left the safety of his corporate job, health insurance and, in the world of our film, he meets Dr. Robert Stonehill, played by Harrison Ford, who’s an irracible renagade. No one wants to work with him. His science is light years ahead of everyone else’s.”

Aileen and John Crowley and their children, Megan and Patrick, whom the movie is based on, were on the set during filming.

“It’s quite a remarkable story. John’s one of the most principled individuals that I’ve ever met. And to have the opportunity to play a person (like that) who lives and walks the earth is an honor,” Fraser said.

Working alongside Ford, whom Fraser looked up to as a kid, was yet another honor the well-rounded actor embraced.

“I have 5-year-old now who is ‘Star Wars’ savvy and it takes me back,” he said.

“So, did the image in your head and the expectation live up to the reality of working with Harrison Ford?” Rodriguez asked.

“I think, once I got over the hero worship — well, actually, I have to say I honestly still haven’t,” he admitted. “He’s a great guy. Very particularly funny. He has a sharp wit.”

As a father of three boys, ages 7, 5, and 3, Fraser doesn’t think they realize just yet that their dad’s a big movie star, even though they’ve seen some of his films. “Well,” he said, “they’ve seen Dad smash into trees wearing funny underpants!” referring to his role in “George of the Jungle.”

Having a dad who plays “George of the Jungle,” is one of the coolest things for a child. “Well, he was cool. I wasn’t wearing that much clothing at the time. It’s nice now to be recognized dressed!” Fraser said.

“Extraordinary Measures” is the first feature from CBS Films.

Fraser: an Extraordinary chat-article and video

In Extraordinary Measures, Brendan Fraser portrays John Crowley, the real patriarch of a family who rejected the sentiment that children with Pompe Disease have a death sentence.

Extraordinary Measures, in theaters January 22, is inspired by the book The Cure by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Geeta Anand. Fraser devoured Anand’s book, but also culled his characterization from meeting John and Aileen Crowley and their Extraordinary children.

Fraser himself has led quite the extraordinary career. The world was first introduced to Fraser when he stole Encino Man from Pauley Shore and never looked back. The actor would go on to superstar status with his role in The Mummy series as well as other starring roles in blockbusters such as Inkheart and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

The actor also earned kudos with his powerful turns in the critically lauded School Ties, Gods and Monsters and Mrs Winterbourne and the Best Picture-winning Crash.

Extraordinary Measures was a very different type of role for Fraser. Not only inspired by the Crowley’s story, but the actor was also heavily influenced by the fact that this one-in-a-million success story is the type of tale that changes, inspires, improves and saves lives. Leaving the theater audiences will possess that same “We can all make a difference in society” powerful feeling as felt after exiting Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side and the Tuohy family story.

In Extraordinary Measures, the moving story also hails from reality, but that is where The Blind Side comparison ends and where the film takes flight.

Fraser welcomed the challenge of giving an inspirational story its cinematic due while simultaneously staying true to the heartstrings involved in the true tale. If Fraser appears excited to speak about his film, it is completely understandable given the power of the film and the true story behind it.

Then, there’s also that whole opportunity to star opposite Harrison Ford thing!

Harrison Ford makes Brendan Fraser nervous

Brendan Fraser would be the first to admit that Harrison Ford’s career was such an inspiration for him as an aspiring young actor that to get a chance to work with him rattled his nerves.

“This is Indiana Jones,” Fraser said excitedly of his first meeting with Ford. Working with his idol made him so jittery during one scene of “Extraordinary Measures” that Fraser couldn’t remember a certain line of dialogue that included some particularly difficult scientific terms. He tried it 15 times.

Finally, Ford walked over to a crew member, borrowed some duct tape and a Sharpie, and taped the line to his own forehead. He stood with his back to the camera so Fraser could read it and deliver his line….Read the rest.

Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser Discuss ‘Extraordinary Measures’

Denerstein: Brendan Fraser plays a driven dad

Judging by his movies, there are at least two Brendan Frasers: The first is a goofy George of Jungle sort of guy or maybe a Mummy kind of hero, an actor who stars in unabashed popcorn movies that sometimes create sequels and often generate megabucks at the box office.

Then, there’s the other Fraser, the guy who acts in serious movies such as The Quiet American or Gods and Monsters. In the new movie, Extraordinary Measures, Fraser tips toward the serious side of his spectrum, playing John Crowley, a father and businessman who worked tirelessly to discover a drug that would save his children from the ravages of Pompe disease. (Pompe is a rare neuromuscular disorder that prior to Crowley’s efforts almost always had proved fatal in children.)

The movie, which teams the 41-year-old Fraser with Harrison Ford, opens Jan. 22, and is based on a book by journalist Geeta Anand. Anand’s The Cure told the story of how Crowley founded a company and sold it to a larger company, but never abandoned his goal: To find a drug that would save the lives of two of his children. At the time of diagnosis, Megan was 15-months-old and Patrick was five-months-old….Read the rest.

Brendan Fraser On His New Role: “I’d Come Home And Hug My Boys A Little Tighter”

Brendan Fraser has fought off mummies and survived an adventure to the center of the earth in 3-D, action-packed blockbusters.
